Stones of significance

November 25, 2003

Interesting short story on David Brin's site dealing with close integration between human beings and AIs, as well as the ethics of simulated realites:

The AI/human cyborg parts remind me a little bit of the Aspects in the Galactic Centre series of books by Gregory Benford, with whom Brin has collaborated in the past. Bit of a predictable end, although at least Brin has the good grace to acknowledge it.

Bits of 'The Matrix' and the Culture minds in there as well, but good stuff...have you read any of his novels? Worth it?

I've only ever read "The Postman", which was fairly standard post-apocalyptic fare, and which was subsequently made into a film with Kevin Costner (uhrg). That kind of put paid to my consumption of David Brin although he does have a good rep within the science fiction genre.

Probably more worth it than any cunt who uses L'Oreal products, anyway.
